It's not the only valuable commodity and there have been many throughout history that have been more valuable than gold, although only one has remained more valuable than gold. The enslavement of mankind to a ruling elite has been the longest and most prosperous natural resource in all of history. Because without it you wouldn't have even had the gold or any thing else that's classified as a commodity. Human slavery was and is still to this day the largest economic commodity on earth.
