Good Monday Morning Nostriches! I was reflecting on yesterday’s GM post, today. I said “today is church” (in my head I was saying “we are going to church”) which got me thinking, especially since we never made it out the door and decided to opt for “couch church” instead. In Greek ἐκκλησία (ekklēsia) literally means “the called-out ones” or “the assembly/gathering” of God’s people (not a building). Yet most people mean what I was thinking (we are going to a building to do a thing…) While it’s certainly a minor thing, like one’s salvation is it dependent upon this, perhaps we could get in the habit of saying what the Greek word actually means… “I’m going to meet with the church.” This is clear, natural, and accurately reflects that you’re going to be with the people, not just attending a building. • Short & clean: “I’m heading to the gathering.” • Warm & relational: “I’m going to be with the church.” Does it matter? Not really…but when we connect our hearts to our minds, we are more aligned with Biblical principles. When we say “I’m going to church,” it can unintentionally reinforce the idea that “church” is a place or event we attend, rather than who we are as the called-out people of God. Using phrases that focus on the people helps keep the biblical meaning front and center. #GM
