I even got an emergency alert for flash floods. These systems are small, compact, and very strong. Lightning, hail, and heavy rain. None of which should be developing out of the Midwest. I wonder how many wallets are actually created by trusting the RNG of affected coldcards. We don't know how many were sold. We don't know how many were affected RNG seeds migrated up to new hardware so even by the numbers sold it really could come down to MK3 users. We don't know how many seeds from those cards were generated for maybe multiple people (family members). We do know that many who had these affected cards were not impacted as they dice rolled, ie did not trust. It will be interesting to see where this all lands.
Toyota, since 2019, has not once apologized for the design flaw that leads to their vehicles being stolen. It's a CANbus injection attack. They have rolled out a fix "if you ask for it". They were made aware in 2022 and it took until 2023 for them to "fix it". The CANbus injection is where theives hook into a port behind a headlight and disable all security, unlock the doors, and can drive off. Additionally, Toyota dealers often install Bluetooth "security" modules that are easily hacked and the cars then stolen. No apologies given. On top of all that they've had cloud data, including vehicle and customer info, stolen right off their systems. Schlage locks, often considered best in the business and protecting homes all across north America, had a vulnerability discovered that rendered them useless and easily bypassed. SentrySafe, the most popular brand of safes for the home or office, have been hacked and cracked repeatedly. The most common crack was a solenoid magnet attack that rendered them useless in under 5 seconds. Apple produced a phone where that highly touted, snotty, egomaniacal leader you all loved, Steve Jobs, told you it didn't work because "you're holding it wrong". Ford produced a car that exploded on rear impact. Boeing produced a plane with new tech that made pilots nervous, didn't educate anyone well enough, and had two major crashes killing 346 people. My point in this? Building things are hard. We place trust in every decision we make and most of what that entails is trust in people making decisions for us. Mistakes happen. Insurance can only go so far to rectify the situation and one can never fully regain trust in society or the promises made by those you did business with. If you have something of value trust a thief is going to try an take it. I don't care what measure of security you think you have. I hope Coinkite recovers. I hope they learned from all this. They still produce some of the best hardware in the business with some very innovative features. I don't care about the noise. I care about the signal. In saying that, it's not to disparage any of the other contributors in the space, many of whom are their competitors who really stepped up during this moment.
