It is commanded because we are called, as image bearers of The Lord, to be like him. He is Holy and He is Love. We were His enemies yet He came and died to pay for our sin, extending grace to us because He is loving. We have no claim to His kindness, but He extends redemption to each person regardless, because that is His character to do so.
