A transparent base layer is needed to make sure the system is accurate. If you can't account for it... then how do you know it exists or that you're not just getting IOUs? I like lightning because it's actual bitcoin tied up in a channel. It's not some "just trust me bro" system. Self-hosting lightning right now. It's not that hard if you're just doing personal payments. Being a routing node is another chore. Things will get easier as we go, as far as ease of use. Most people don't run nodes or run miners at home... so a lot of people have no clue how bitcoin works as a full system. Being able to run a node on basic hardware is important! Not everyone lives in a "first-world" bubble where computers are cheap. Years down the road it's going to be worse. Either it's a monetary network or it's not. It's OK to tell people to go build elsewhere if they want to play with pictures and try and to work around long standing rules. Vitalik and many others got told to go play elsewhere.
