Project Gutenberg has free books. I feel like that is not widely enough known. America has some of the strictest public domain rules so you may have better luck finding a specific book on an international version of the site. Orwell is not available in America but is on the Aussie site and I presume others.

Less Wrong material is definitely worth at least a little of your time. It is what school should have been.
