Over the Shandur Pass, at the roof of the world The Shandur Pass in Pakistan connects Chitral with Gilgit-Baltistan and is home to the legendary Shandur Polo Festival, held on the highest polo ground on earth at around 3,700 meters. Here, freestyle polo is played — raw, fast, and with very few rules 😃 Unfortunately, we weren’t here in July when the festival takes place, but at a time when the pass was almost completely deserted. We rode for hours without meeting anyone, except the soldiers at the military checkpoint. Just after the pass lies the famous Shandur Lake. It is often so windless that the surrounding mountains are perfectly reflected in the water — like a natural mirror, completely surreal.
