Self hosting have no reasons to be that expensive, if sooner giants do not want to push people out of it. You can host most common services for 500€ / 880kSAT if some times ago. Unfortunately IMVHO there are no usable, reasonably free mobile solutions, that's why I'm sick to desktop as much as I can. It's a more complex topic though because the main point is that a modern society need remote work, so desktops, homes with semi-autonomous power, sheds, not mobile to continuously moving between big buildings in dense areas. The gig economy need the very contrary: to push people owning nothing they need dense cities, large buildings, collective transport and so on, but that's against current tech evolution, so it will fail with much pain.
