I think that is true for some people. Some of it is cultural and some of it is that when people have families they have a harder time maintaining friendships in general. There's also the jealous spouse aspect.

We saved a starving dog off the street and after it recovered, we learned it was also a border collie. Very smart dogs. Training improved once we used positive, rather than negative, reinforcement. Have a great time with the dog.
