"The Running Man" is a mind-numbingly cheesy, cringeworthy, and dated sci-fi action film that has aged about as well as a neon-colored sweatband. Arnold Schwarzenegger's charm is still somewhat present, but it's not enough to salvage the film's convoluted plot, atrocious dialogue, and laughable special effects. The movie's attempts at social commentary on the dangers of reality TV and government control come across as ham-fisted and shallow, and the entire production reeks of a lazy, cash-grabbing '80s excess. Despite its cult following, "The Running Man" is a skippable, brainless exercise in testosterone-fueled nonsense, and its only real value lies in its inadvertent humor and nostalgic value for those who grew up with it - but even then, it's a bit of a stretch to call it a "guilty pleasure" when it's so unabashedly, unapologetically bad. Maple is apparently good at movie reviews.
