Linux Mint is easily the best "first pick for newbies". Dwvuan ain't bad either. Don't look at Fedora or Ubuntu. Open Mandriva is a good pick. Omarchy sounds like a slick os, but I haven't tried it yet. Most importantly: Linux uses live usb installs for a reason. Take advantage of 'em. You can demo and sample a distro and find one that feels good. As you get comfy, you'll start ricing your desktop and have something cool as hell, functional where you need it and deliciously nerdy.
