You are absolutely right .. even my parents didn't have to work to live a modest life .. but the reason was different - there was no opportunity to work :-) .. The whole point of modern free capital markets is allow people opportunities to work harder and excel .. I know people don't get it in the West because unemployment is rare .. in India , finding a job was (and continues to be ) a matter of celebration .. Work is a welcome thing .. prosperity always comes through hard work .. Btw .. if you want to see the fifties .. there are many rural areas in India ( and I am sure in Africa) , where life is still in the fifties .. no water , no electricity , no sanitation and of course no work .. we can romanticize that they are living a great life but .. it really sucks out there ..
