Thank you for pointing out how geopolitics complicate everything. This is also my view. I believe that, originally, Islam was very simple but geopolitics created sectarian divides. They managed to export their sect to your local mosque and if you raise any suspicions that you are not one of them, they will consider you a non-believer or even worse, an apostate.
