Deanna Heikkinen is an author, historian, and educator dedicated to making the history of money and civilization engaging and meaningful for learners of all ages. With a Doctorate in Education and a Master of Arts degree in both History and Anthropology, she brings deep academic insight and a passion for storytelling to her teaching and writing. Her work explores the intersections of world history, Western civilization, and monetary evolution. Deanna co-authored, with her husband Joel, the 2024 book Shells to Satoshi: The Story of Money & The Rise of Bitcoin, which follows the development of money from ancient exchange systems to Bitcoin. Her 2025 book Ownschooling: Bitcoin, Sovereignty, and Education encourages parents to take ownership of their children’s education and explores how financial security relates to that issue. She is also writing a multi-level children’s book series that traces the story of currency, from cowrie shells to Bitcoin, helping young readers grasp how societies have defined and redefined value across time. Recently, she has founded the Money Wisdom Project. The nonprofit organization’s goal is to provide free curriculum and books on the history of money and Bitcoin for teachers, schools, community programs, and Bitcoin circular economies.
