Preparing food, raising children, working with our hands, building community, and seeking a relationship with our creator is timeless and grounding. We are not some thing to be optimized. Our common connection and purpose is not to be traded for conveniences or innovated away.

I agree that self work is important, as it is what you can control. Focusing on it prevents you from distracting yourself with the bad behavior of others. And, I think you're right that it leads to perspective and compassion. "You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." I would suggest that self improvement would include serving others, so it's not confused with selfishness.
