Well... I think the difference is that the fire department has the same interest as you. They want to keep/stop your stuff from burning. The police are set opposed to you. They enforce laws that you did not get a say in and that you might not agree with. Some of which you may not even be aware of breaking. To sum up, fire fighters come on the scene with the assumption that you are the good guy and they need to help you. Law enforcement come on the scene with the assumption you are the bad guy and they need to find out what you did. This may not be 100% accurate, but I think it is the perception that they create even when they are "doing their job" as you say.

This was my first comment and reaction and I stand by it

The ultimate lesson of the civil war is that might makes right. It didn't matter why the south wanted the leave the union, it's the fact that it was never really possible. And it should be.

Ultimately it was about a state's right to secede from the union when they disagreed. We lose sight of the fact that these were supposed to be individual governing states that collaborated. It started off as a Confederacy, not the South the United States.
