It works if there's clearly defined boundaries and ownership rather than all sharing. Each individual (or each family) has their own shit: My house, my patch of land, my veges, my responsibilities. Of course there should be trade of goods and services between residents, but the communal model inevitably leads to conflict as it can never be "fair" while individuals have different wants, needs, skills, incentives, etc
