๐ŸŽฅ Watch Party Wednesday was a success! Today, we watched a video from Simply Bitcoin exploring the growing debate around AI regulation, superintelligence, surveillance, and centralised control. ๐Ÿ”‘ Key takeaways: โ€ข AI development is moving faster than regulation. โ€ข Powerful voices are now debating how much control governments should have over AI. โ€ข The same systems used to manage AI could raise wider questions about privacy, surveillance, and financial control. โ€ข Programmable money could give institutions greater control over how people use their money. โ€ข Bitcoin offers a different model: open, decentralised, permissionless, and difficult for any single authority to switch off. ๐ŸŒ What does this mean for Africa? Africa is still building its digital economy. The choices made today around AI, money, privacy, and open technology could shape how much control individuals, businesses, and governments have tomorrow. This makes understanding technologies like AI and Bitcoin increasingly important. Big thank you to everyone who joined todayโ€™s Watch Party and contributed to the discussion! ๐Ÿงก See you next Wednesday! ๐Ÿซก

๐ŸŒ PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: BitDevs Gitega ๐Ÿ“ Location: Gitega, Burundi ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฎ About: BitDevs Gitega is a Bitcoin-only technical community in Gitega for developers, educators, builders, students, and technically curious people who want to go beyond surface-level adoption and study how Bitcoin actually works. The group focuses on Bitcoin protocol development, the Lightning Network, privacy tools, free and open-source software, and practical use cases that fit Burundiโ€™s local context. Key Objectives: 1. Deepen Bitcoin technical knowledge through regular Socratic Seminars, reading groups, workshops, and study sessions on protocol design, Lightning, privacy, and related tools. 2. Support local developers and builders as they learn to write, review, and ship Bitcoin software, including hands-on projects and open-source work relevant to Burundi. 3. Host consistent technical gatherings that give Gitega a reliable space for collaborative learning, critique, and discussion instead of one-off events. 4. Encourage free and open-source contribution by helping members find grants, bounties, fellowships, and ways to publish code, notes, and local-language learning resources. 5. Strengthen Burundiโ€™s Bitcoin developer community by connecting Gitega talent to the wider African and global BitDevs network while keeping the focus technical, Bitcoin-only, and locally grounded. How is Bitcoin adoption progressing in Burundi? ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฎ Bitcoin adoption in Burundi is steadily gaining momentum, driven by grassroots communities focused on education, technical development, financial inclusion, and building a circular Bitcoin economy. Some of the projects leading this growth: ๐Ÿ”ท BitDevs Gitega โ€” A technical Bitcoin community in Gitega inspired by @BitDevsNYC. It hosts meetups, workshops, study groups, and Socratic seminars for developers, builders, educators, and Bitcoin enthusiasts. ๐Ÿ”ท BTC Shule โ€” A leading initiative building Bitcoin circular economies in communities such as Gitega and Winteko. Through meetups, training, and hands-on education, BTC Shule empowers individuals with the knowledge and tools to use Bitcoin in everyday life. ๐Ÿ”ท Free Tech Institute (FREETI) โ€” A non-profit think tank advancing digital freedom, entrepreneurship, and decentralized technologies through Bitcoin education, youth empowerment, policy advocacy, and community initiatives. ๐Ÿ”ท Rurbit โ€” Building Bitcoin-powered financial infrastructure for rural and underserved communities, enabling greater financial sovereignty where traditional banking services are limited or unavailable. ๐Ÿ”— Discover more projects driving Bitcoin adoption across Africa in our directory: https://directory.bitcoiners.africa

๐ŸŒ Project Spotlight: ZazaPay ๐Ÿ“ Location: Ghana ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญ About: ZazaPay is a Ghana-built Bitcoin-to-fiat payment platform that makes Bitcoin usable in everyday African money systems. A sender pays in Bitcoin over the Lightning Network; the recipient does not need a wallet, an exchange account, or any Bitcoin knowledge. The platform went live in early 2026 after founder built it in public through the usual hard parts of payments: webhooks, failed transactions, liquidity, and deployment. Key Objectives: 1. Make Lightning payments usable in daily life by settling Bitcoin invoices in seconds and converting them immediately into spendable local currency. 2. Bridge Bitcoin with mobile money and bank rails so recipients get paid the way they already receive money, especially MTN Mobile Money and bank accounts. 3. Cut the friction in local and cross-border transfers across Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and additional African markets, without forcing the receiver onto digital assets. 4. Give merchants, freelancers, and families a practical off-ramp so global Bitcoin payments can become cedis, naira, or shillings without chargebacks or banking delays. 5. Widen financial access by letting people send value from anywhere and cash out into the payment systems already used across Africa.
