That's a good question. I think people who believe this fall into three categories: 1. (99%) People who do not understand what LLMs are or what they do. 2. (0.99%) People who understand this perfectly well but have a lot of stock in things that will only appreciate if lots of investors can be made to believe this. 3. (0.01%) LLM researchers who desperately want to believe they can make this happen, and have somehow contrived to fool themselves.
By day I am a computer programmer with Index Data, where I have been happily and gainfully employed for 20 years. By night, I am a vertebrate palaeontologist with the University of Bristol, specialising in sauropods: the biggest and best of all dinosaurs. I am an advocate for open access, open data and open source, and I'm beginning to think pre-publication peer-review might be a mistake. I support #LFC.
