Sounds a bit like crypto ICOs. The product doesn't matter, as long as you can attrackt investors. Once the ball is rolling people will just buy because the price went up. Until the price goes down and the project fades into irrelevancy. Building in the dark and relying on sales seems like the slower but more sustainable path. It also allows you to stay true to your vision and focus less on appeasing Investors.
