Monero is persecuted by the state with extensive regulation causing delistings from major exchanges and constantly shutting down nonKYC exchanges like TradeOgre and Majestic Bank. Why? It's effective. Mixing tech like Samourai Wallet and Tornado Cash were persecuted by the state with Lawfare and jail time. Why? Because they were effective. There's a reason why lightning is basically unregulated and we've seen no state attacks against it. Same for Wasabi. But projects like Ashigaru have nym devs hosted on the darknet. Judge by the fruits. When you get into the weeds you can rationalize anything, just step back and look from the outside.

Can you verify that that's the case by auditing the source code? Or are you trusting their words alone?

In my experience it's a combination of coping with "I don't care about privacy", discomfort with change, admitting they've been completely lacking privacy wise and embarassment from not knowing how to improve the situation.
