My thoughts about OP_RETURN / eliminating filters on Bitcoin. I support eliminating filters, as it aligns with the "one home, one bitcoin node" approach. This is a technical matter where I align with Peter Todd’s perspective on efficiency, but also agree with Mechanic, that we should not cater to spammers. To understand the implications, we need to analyze and compare a few key concepts: -The difference between the UTXO Set and the Bitcoin Blockchain -Pruned nodes versus full nodes -The OP_RETURN opcode The OP_RETURN opcode is a marker that designates a transaction output as final, invalid, or unspendable, automatically excluding it from the UTXO Set (which is great), which prevents spreading that "SPAM transaction" across pruned nodes. In contrast, other protocols that store data on-chain without using OP_RETURN create valid UTXOs, which can overwhelm the UTXO Set, making those txs unprunable, an undesirable outcome for home node runners. Both pruned and full nodes maintain the complete UTXO Set, making it critical to keep this set as clean and efficient as possible. Removing the filter on OP_RETURN (e.g., the 80-byte limit) encourages spammers to store data in OP_RETURN outputs, which are prunable and do not affect the UTXO Set. Removing the filter will not increase the size of the UTXO Set, ensuring that future home users running pruned nodes remain unaffected in terms of storage and performance. Therefore, eliminating filters, it's a matter of minimizing harm, a measure to protect noderunners, particularly those operating pruned nodes. All protocols increase blockchain size, but OP_RETURN based protocols are prunable, reducing long-term storage needs for pruned nodes. For example, scriptPubKey or Witness Data (SegWit): Used by Ordinals to store large data in the witness field, exploiting SegWit’s relaxed size limits (misusing the intended use of that field). They create spendable UTXOs, impacting the UTXO Set, which bloats the UTXO Set.

The Bitcoin mindset embraces low time preference: plant a seed, watch it grow, build stuff, build a family, and work daily to shape a brighter future for your loved ones and your community called earth planet.

One of the fundamental principles of Bitcoin is decentralization; no one will stop that train, and we need more builders to support it. I will be happy when I see more companies like mine. It’s not about us; it’s about the movement.
