I studied psychology for many years and still do. There are several coneptual models for understanding how the brain works. One of them is the computer metaphor. The computer metaphor rests on a materialistic belief that all thoughts and emotions can be understood at the atomic or chemical level, like a formula or a computer program. This is far from the truth. Any neuroscientist with enough humility to admit it will tell you we know about as much about the human brain as we do about deep space or the bottom of the ocean. The metaphor which fits my understanding the best is more of a receiver of consciousness rather than a producer or a calculator. Comparing the brain to a router or a modem might get you closer, but it's still just a metaphor. The materialistic approach to understanding anything breaks downn at the quantum level.
