The courage to experience life I recently returned from three weeks in Africa with my wife, my children, and my 70-year-old mother, who traveled all the way from Guatemala to Switzerland and then joined us for the journey. My mother lives with severe hearing loss, but watching her travel, adapt, explore, and take on new adventures with her grandchildren reminded me of something simple: Life does not stop asking us to experience it just because things become more difficult. She has an incredible spirit of service and an enormous love for her children and grandchildren. She continues to surprise me with her strength, curiosity, and willingness to do things she has never done before. Having her with us in Kenya was a gift. Sometimes our parents teach us without saying much. They simply show us what is possible. And my mother reminded me that curiosity, love, and the desire to experience life can remain incredibly strong at any age. I hope I can carry that lesson with me for the rest of my life.

Stillness

Hug a tree. Do it often, at least once a week. Stand still, breathe deeply, and let yourself reconnect with something older, wiser, and quietly alive. Feel the Earth’s steady pulse, the silence, the strength. Let the energy of the universe flow through every cell of your body, reminding you that you are not separate from nature, you are it.
