â[Tale/Conto]sâ§
âąÂ«A Aventura Das Duas İrmĂŁs» («The Adventure Of The Two Sisters»). İtâs a ok tale.
â«A Aventura Das Duas İrmĂŁs». Ă um conto ok.
âąÂ«A DimensĂŁo Das Teias» («The Dimension Of The Cobwebs»): A tale involving an yĆkai (ćŠæȘ â typical supernatural beings from the japanese mythology), more specifically the JorĆgumo (甥æ°ć©Š â ăăăăăă â spider-woman) type.
â«A DimensĂŁo Das Teias» («The Dimension Of The Cobwebs»): Um conto envolvendo uma yĆkai (ćŠæȘ â seres sobrenaturais tĂpicos da mitologia japonesa), mais especifŃcamente do tipo JorĆgumo (甥æ°ć©Š â ăăăăăă â mulher-aranha).
İn the end, the connection between Moriarty and the yĆkai isnât explained, but this doesnât pose a prejudice to the reading of the tale, because the lack of this knowledge doesnât prevents the reader from understand how Sherlock neutralized the menace.
âąÂ«A Tumba İnca» («The İncan Tomb»). İ already had said in my other writings that İâm not the kind of [writ/read]er who demands to the protagonists to always win. However, in this tale, the actions of Sherlock were pointless, and the facts of the case were left unexplained. İf Sherlock predicted the murder dates according to the Moon phases, Âż why the plan was to split the people in different rooms in the night of the next murder, instead of a vigil w/ everyone in the same room? And, if Sherlock had alrealdy predicted the murder dates according to the Moon phases, Âż why he failed to save Mr. Palmer from being murdered one month later? Âż And why the murders occurred according to the Moon phases at all? Âż And why the villagers, from the village where the artifacts were taken, associated the ghost of the woman who was raped and murdered w/ some kind of rebirth deity?
â«A Tumba İnca».
âąÂ«De Volta A Lauriston Gardens» («Back To Lauriston Gardens»). The murderer killed the dealer simply because he didnât had the sum of money that the assassin wished to sell the antiqĂŒes; this motivation is hard for the reader to swallow. İâm not saying that murder cases like this doesnât happen in the real life (people kill w/ even more refŃnements of cruelty in the real life for much less than this); İâm just saying that this motivation isnât credible for a Sherlock Holmes story. This is a typical instance in which the realistic isnât necessarily verosimile.
âąÂ«Deduzindo O İmprovĂĄvel» («Deducting The İmprobable»). Here, Sherlock discovers that theyâre dealing w/ a «peeira» (PE-EY-RAH*) (the «fĂŠrie of the wolves» of the İberian legends; a woman, being the seventh daughter of a couple, who can control a pack of werewolves). Hoever, in the resolution of the case, he decides to hush the case, claiming the world isnât prepared to know the truth yet. A clichĂ© that, unfortunately, is pervasive in the horror works.
âąÂ«Doutor Watson E O Caso Do Tabuleiro De Xadrez» («Doctor Watson And The Case Of The Chess Board») is a big plot hole itself. İt, as the Brazilian saying says, «has more holes than the water-tank of a slum dwellerâs house after a shootout».
The tale is set after the death of Sherlock. Âż Why this decision, if the abilities of Watson as a doctor are never relevant for the case?
The supernatural (or something seeming supernatural) never appears in the tale. Âż So why including it in this anthology at all?
The tale follow the clichĂ© of the client who tells what she knows gradually, after being repeteadly qĂŒestioned, instead of simply telling the [particular/specifŃc]ities of the case on the way to her home.
The tale also follows the cliché of the client who seeks for help in the last possible day, giving an artificial sense of urgency to the narrative.
İtâs ok to say that the client knew that, if Watson didnât solved the case in that same day, her brother would be executed. But the tale never explains how she knew that she also would be living on the streets if Watson didnât solved the case in that same day.
Watson described the client, the Oâneal daughter, as a woman in her fourties. This means that, when her father died, she was at least 37. Âż Why Clinfton Roberts, the familyâs lawyer, had such legal powers over the fortune of the adult children?
İf her brother, before being arrested, had time to set-up an intrincate puzzle involving a chess board, and to write a letter telling that the solution of the case was in it, Âż why he didnât used this time to tell the truth to his sister (either using sign language, or directly giving to her a note written w/ pencil-and-paper)?
Furthermore, she said that her brother set-up the puzzle as a way to tell the truth w/out using a letter that could be intercepted. But wait. Âż Why the need of this at all? Three years, Âż and she didnât visited her brother in the prison, where he could tell her the truth personally? Furthermore, Âż why the need of the puzzle at all? İf he wrote a letter telling that the solution of the case was in it, he could simply write a letter openly telling the facts to his sister.
Âż Pra quĂȘ sequer a necessidade disso? TrĂȘs anos, e ela nunca visitou o irmĂŁo dela na prisĂŁo, onde ele poderia contar a ela a verdade pessoalmente? AlĂ©m disso, Âż porque sequer a necessidade dum quebra-cabeça?
The tale also never explains how her brother discovered that the lawyer was the murderer, or how he discovered the existence of a secret affair between the lawyer and the woman who would marry their father.
İn the end of the tale, Watson said that no-one would take in the consideration the testimony of the brother of the client, due to of his condition. ¿ But, why not? He was [mute/dumb], not mentally impaired.
The tale also donât show how Watson would save the brother of the client from being executed, since he only solved a puzzle, w/out obtaining any [proof/evidence] that could be accepted by the justice.
âąÂ«Funeral De CoraçÔes» («Funeral Of Hearts»). İtâs a well-made tale. İn it there are both the extraordinary forensic devices invented by Sherlock, and the Watsonâs abilities to identify the true assassin. Furthermore, itâs interesting to see the dynamics of a supernatural being who kept the bonds w/ her family (her father, and her husband, in this case).
However, the tale has some problems. İn it, Watson has the same clichĂ© reaction that İ already mentioned that Sherlock had in the tale «Deduzindo O İmprovĂĄvel» («Deducting The İmprobable»), but, in this case, the scientific community actually would have palpable proofs about the supernatural: in this case, the Lady Godalmingâs physiological characteristics. Furthermore, he said that he doubted that cells would be able to stop her (a qĂŒestionable thing); but, in this case, Âż why not just incinerate her?
The tale has a minor plot hole (or, at the least, a strange point): the captain, father of the murderess, said that he saw her in her cabin at the time in which Barney, the cook, was assassinated.
The tale ended w/ a «sequel hook», because the corpse of the murderess disappeared after Watson shot her, and the Godalming familyâs [lawyer/attorney] refused to give informations about the death of the Lord Godalming.
âąÂ«Ä°gneoptera»: İtâs a ok tale.
â«İgneoptera»: Ă um conto ok.
âąÂ«O Assassinato Do SĂ©culo» («The Murder Of The Century»). The tale never explains how Moriarty became a werewolf.
â«O Assassinato Do SĂ©culo».
âąÂ«O Caso Da Caixa Dourada» («The Case Of The Golden Box»). İt was narratively lazy that Watson said that he didnât knew how Sherlock opened the door of the Brown coupleâs house (saying that he used lockpicking skills would suffice). Furthermore, the tale not even explained what the menace of the golden box is, or what Sherlock did to neutralize it.
âąÂ«O Caso Da Sala de Origamis» («The Case Of The Origamiâs Room»). The same problem than «Doutor Watson E O Caso Do Tabuleiro De Xadrez» («Doctor Watson And The Case Of The Chess Board»): if there wasnât something supernatural (or that seemed supernatural), Âż why it became part of the anthology?
Furthermore, if Mrs. Kate didnât loved Mr. EiichirĆ (ăăăăĄăă), Âż why to propose an origami task, instead of simply quitting the job?
âąÂ«O Caso Da Torre» («The Case Of The Tower»). When Sherlock says «İâm gonna to discover what happened», this can be both a sequel hook, or a nonconformist stance by Sherlock before the supernatural.
âąÂ«O Caso Do Homem İndiano» («The Case Of The Man from İndia»). Absolutelly no resolution or explanation is given in the end of the tale.
â«O Caso Do Homem İndiano». Absolutamente nenhuma resolução ou explicação Ă© dada no fŃm do conto.
âąÂ«O Caso Do LadrĂŁo Fantasma» («The Case Of The Ghostly [Burglar/Thief]»). The supernatural connection here is too tenuous to justify its inclusion in the anthology: as the thefts were mysterious, it was said, in a half-joke, that they only could be commited by a ghost.
â«O Caso Do LadrĂŁo Fantasma».
Furthermore, conveniently, the tale donât explain to us how Sherlock conducted the investigation; he only says that he disguised himself as an elderly seaman to do so.
âąÂ«O Caso Do Tesouro De Miquerinos» («The Case Of The Menkaureâs Treasure»). The tale never explains whatâs the connection between the Menkaureâs Treasure (the Egyptian pharaoh) (pieces of papyrus, a stone, a dagger, and a fragment of human bone, probably coming from a femur) and the coming of the «doppelgĂ€nger» (the supernatural [double/copy]), and much less the reason why the apparitions only appeared one day after the people had opened the recipient containing the treasure.
â«O Caso Do Tesouro De Miquerinos».
«O Enigma O Hexagrama 11» («The Enigma Of The Eleventh Hexagram»). A good tale, well above the average, involving the İ-Ching (æç» â The Chinese method of divination). The tale, as the title shows, involves the 11th hexagram (ä· â æł° â TĂ i â Peace) and its interaction w/ the 12th one (ä· â ćŠ â PÇ â Standstill).
â«O Enigma do Hexagrama 11».
The most interesting thing is that itâs discovered that the case wasnât of murder, but of accident.
İts also interesting that Watson tell us that Sherlock is keeping solving his cases even after his own death, imparting the solution of the cases to a Spiritist medium.
The only negative point of the tale is when Sherlock exhibits his deductive abilities unnecessarily, by analysing the Mr. Kentbleugh.
âąÂ«O Fantasma Do Sr. Marshall» («Mr. Marshallâs Ghost»). A case of a common crime, disguised as a supernatural one. The only negative point is the scene in which the two books fall from the libraryâs shelf; besides the fact that the occurrence is left unexplained at the ending, it doesnât seem to add anything to the resolution of the case.
â«O Fantasma Do Sr. Marshall».
âąÂ«O Homem İnvisĂvel» («The İnvisible Man»). One more supernatural case, thatâs left opened.
âąÂ«O Horror De Grosvenor Square» («The Horror Of Grosvenor Square»): The opening scene is very welcome, because it puts the Nautilus Submarine and the Captain Nemo (by Jules Verne) in the tale. The one looking for Sherlock Holmes to investigate an assassination attempt in none other than Dorian Gray (by Oscar Wilde) himself.
The tale also openly treats the subject of the Sherlockâs drug addiction, since its said that he and Dorian attended the same places.
The negative point of this tale is that the resolution of the assassination attempt is delivered in a rushed and lazy way, and this is a frustrating thing. At the end, it seems that the tale was written only for the sake of referencing to these shared literary universes.
âąÂ«O İnsĂłlito Caso De Espiritualismo Do Casal Doyle» («The Doyleâs Couple Uncanny Spiritist Case»). Here the Doyle couple (Jean Elizabeth Leckie & Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) are presented as characters of the tale (Sherlock and Sir Conan Doyle even had a conversation), as well as the magician Harry Houdini (Eri[k/ch] Weis[s/z]).
âąÂ«O İnsĂłlito Caso De Espiritualismo Do Casal Doyle».
The only negative point of the tale is that it never explains the reason why the informations given by Jean about the Houdiniâs mother are wrong, since her mediunic abilities are presented as true.
âąÂ«O MistĂ©rio Do Hotel Huckleberry» (The Mystery Of The Huckleberry Hotel»). Sherlock explained to the authorities that the suicidal man climbed in a block of ice when he hanged himself. Âż But how the authorities swalowed this explanation? Âż How the suicidal man would obtain a block of ice of that size w/out attracting attention?
â«O MistĂ©rio Do Hotel Huckleberry».
âThe tale ends w/out explaining whatâs the Moriarty connection w/ the case, or qhat was behing the wave of suicides and assassinations in the hotel; well, if we donât swallow the initial explanation that it attracted the societyâs low-lifes just because it had low prices.
âąÂ«O Padre Que Escondia As MĂŁos» («The Cleric Who Used To Hide His Hands»). Although we have a masterpiece here, it can be disturbing to readers w/ a Christian background, or w/ personal histories of sexual abuse or STD (sexually transmissible diseases). Ye had been warned.
â«O Padre Que Escondia As MĂŁos».
Here, different from the other tales, both the presence of the supernatural, and the stance of Sherlock and Watson towards the facts of the case, are well-based.
âAqui, diferente dos outros contos, tanto a presença do sobrenatural, como a postura de Sherlock e Watson diante dos fatos do caso, sĂŁo bem embasadas.
The tale never explains exactly the contagion of the syphilis (whether Emily transmitted it to the cleric, he transmitted it to her, or each one contracted it independently). However, this isnât essential to the development of the plot.
A point that, although wasnât a demerit to the plot, is certainly something controversial, is that it reinforces the stereotype of the Christian cleric whoâs also a sexual predator (after all, this also happens in other religions). However, knowing about the Leftist editorial stance of the Cartola publishing house, we can wonder whether the tale was chosen (at least partially) due to such portrayal of a Christian cleric...
Note: VinĂcius Bim, the author, is the host of the «PorĂŁo Esquecido: Lar De Grandes HistĂłrias» («Forgotten Basement: The Home Of Great Stories»), where he recorded an audio narration of this tale (audiobook), and itâs scary.
#PoraoEsquecido
âąÂ«O PorĂŁo Em Wych Cross» («The Basement İn Wych Cross»). First of all, the tale is divided in four sections. The fŃrst one is completely unnecessary to the tale, as itâs merely contains ramblings by Watson.
â«O PorĂŁo Em Wych Cross». Primeiramente, o conto Ă© dividido em quatro seçÔes. A primeira delas Ă© completamente desnecessĂĄria ao conto, pois meramente contĂ©m divagaçÔes por Watson.
The explanation that Arthur called Sherlock to solve the case due to mere vanity is too forced, because it looks too forced that he would accept expose himself in such a way.
Furthermore, the tale never explains how Sherlock would neutralize Arthur; after all, a dangerous «adept of arcane arts» (in the Sherlockâs words), who had just assassinated his own uncle, needed to be neutralized, lest to remain free.
While reading the tale, it reminded me the tale «Out Of The Aeons» (by Howard Phillips Lovecraft), due to the theme of the sabotage by the exchange of magical formulas.
âAo ler o conto, ele me lembrou o conto «Out Of The Aeons» («Fora Dos Ăons», por Howard Phillips Lovecraft), pelo tema de sabotagem atravĂ©s da troca de fĂłrmulas mĂĄgicas.
âąÂ«O Sapateiro GalĂȘs» («The Welsh Shoemaker»). Tale involving the «morgen» (the mermaids of the Welsh mythology). The tale never explains why the shoemaker was assassinated.
â«O Sapateiro GalĂȘs». Conto envolvendo as «morgen» (as sereias da mitologia galesa). O conto nunca explica porque o sapateiro foi assassinado.
Here, Sherlock repeats the clichĂ© that the world isnât prepared yet to know the truth; what doesnât make any sense, since the mayor himself forbade new construction works in the property, in response of an widespread fear of the morgen.
Furthermore, nothing is made to neutralize the menace, and Sherlock limited himself to say to doctor Terfel that nothing would happen if he «took care well» of the.
âAlĂ©m disso, nada Ă© feito pra neutralizar a ameaça, com Sherlock se limitando a dizer pro doutor Terfel que nada aconteceria se ele «cuidasse bem» do lago.
âąÂ«O TeatrĂłlogo E A Dama De Preto» («The Playwright & The Woman IÌn Black»). The tale never explains about the involvement of Malcolm Murdock, Jonathan Sunhill, and the woman in black in the case. Futhermore, her identity, or the nature of the experiments, also are never explained. Furthermore, the case is left opened.
â«O TeatrĂłlogo E A Dama De Preto» O conto nunca esclarece qual Ă© a participação de Malcolm Murdock, Jonathan Sunhill, e a dama de preto no caso. AlĂ©m disso, a identidade dela, ou a natureza dos experimentos, tambĂ©m nunca sĂŁo reveladas. AlĂ©m disso, o caso fŃca em aberto.
âąÂ«Os Quatro Bules De Chå» («The Four Teapots»). Tale involving the legend of the JiÄngshÄ« (æźć± â Chinese vampires). Here, different from other tales, the Sherlockâs stance to cover the supernatural is plausible, because this was done in order to clear the name of an innocent one, because the authorities would not believe otherwise.
â«Os Quatro Bules De Chå». Conto envolvendo a lenda do JiÄngshÄ« (æźć± â vampiros chineses).
âąÂ«Paralisia Do Sono» (Sleep Paralysis»). The tale shouldât even be in this anthology, as itâs a [philosoph/psycholog]ical one, and his focus wasnât in any specific case. Finally, the reference made by Sherlock about a case involving «screams in the well» (potentially supernatural) is more interesting than the tale itself: and when the [appetiz/start]er is better than the main [course/dish], we have a problem.
â«Paralisia Do Sono».
İnterestingly enough, years later the Cartola publishing house made an anthology of the same name (and w/ this theme), but his tale didnât appeared on it.
âąÂ«Quando Eliminamos O IÌmpossĂvel» («When We Have Eliminated The IÌmpossible»). The tale begins w/ the «in media res» literary technique (when the narrative begins amidst the action); to avoid letting the reader lost amidst the facts (what didnât worked very well, read below), the narrative relied in dialogues that were so explositive that it seemed too forced.
The tale never explains exactly how died the first wife of the Sherlockâs client, and why her ghost wished to attack her former husband. The tale makes suggestions that he was emotionally abusive, and could be involved in something potentially illegal (since Sherlock mentioned a blackmail); but nothing conclusive is ever mentioned.
Watson uses coarse salt to stop the apparition. However, the apparition is capable of destructing doors and create wind gusts capable of scattering the coarse salt that was poured. Then, Âż why it didnât destructed the door first and create a wind gust later, in order to scatter the coarse salt to be able to attack?
âWatson usa sal grosso pra conter a aparição.
The tale makes a bit of confusion between demons and ghostly apparitions, sice the ghost is neutralized w/ an exorcism ritual. And the menace of the ghost is only temporarily neutralized, closing w/ a seqĂŒel hook.
âąÂ«Red Velvet» (the original title is in English). The tale is a bit confuse (nebulous), raising a series of qĂŒestions unanswered. Âż How Sherlock obtained the diary of Ashley Sampson (the red velved lady)? Âż Why its three last pages were missing? Âż Why the housemaid made notes in the ladyâs diary, instead of writing it in her own diary, or telling the authorities about the complete truth about the case? Âż Why the three missing pages were found in the ladyâs own tomb?
At the end, we have a qĂŒestion: Âż how Sherlock will prove that the brother of the murderer also had an involvement in the murder, in the condition of accomplice? İf the red velvet lady wrote that after she passed away, no one would accept the notes of an apparition as a [proof/evidence] in the court; if she wrote it while she was still alive, the defense of the defendant would claim that these were subjective suspicions, and the assassination commited by the brother wouldnât imply in the fault of his client.
âąÂ«O Ăltimo Assassinato De Jack» («The Last Murder Of Jack The Ripper»). Here, Sherlock repeats the clichĂ© that the world isnât prepared yet to know the truth. Worst, here Sherlock goes beyond: it hides back a set of [proof/evidence]s where he found them; in this case, he puts a set of letters and an human heart (yeah, you read it right) back in a box in a secret compartment under the floorboard. İ imagine that the effects of its putrefaction, like the smell, would attract the attention of the investigators sooner or later.
âąÂ«Um Crime Sem Rosto» («A Faceless Crime»). İt looks more an cheap melodrama. The daggerâs curse is never explained in details. The «case» (if we even can call it this way) is «solved» in a lazy way, throwing the dagger in the ocean, obviously ignoring the fact that some diver or fishing net could recover it later. The lazy style of this kind of resolution, simply abandoning a cursed artifact in a lonely place, reminded me a lot the tale «The Recurring Doom», by the İndian writer Sunand Tryambak («S. T.») Joshi.
T.») Joshi.
And thereâs something more: if Watson died, Âż how heâs telling us this story? İf, at least, it was explained that the automatic writing was used (like in the tale «An İnhabitant Of Carcosa», por Ambrose Bierce), it would be alright. But here, even this isnât explained.
âąÂ«Um Segundo Caso De İdentidade» («A Second Case Of İdentity»). We have a rare masterpiece here, of the same level of «O Padre Que Escondia As MĂŁos» («The Cleric Who Used To Hide His Hands»). İn both tales, we have a culprit who gets the deserved supernatural punishment.
âąÂ«VĂłs Que Sabeis» («Ye Who Know»). İtâs a ok tale.
â«VĂłs Que Sabeis». Ă um conto ok.
âąÂ«The Terror Of Blue John Gap». This is the Conan Doyleâs original tale included in this anthology, like İ said above. İt shouldnât be included in the anthology because, although it was writen by Conan Doyle and it deals w/an uncanny occurrence, it doesnât seem to have anything do w/ Sherlock.
â«O Terror Da Fenda Blue John» («The Terror Of Blue John Gap»).

Normally, the short length of tales isnât usually a problem for me. However, in this book, İ noticed that many of the cases deserved a better (more detailed) treatment; in these aspects, İ had to use my imagination as a reader to fŃll such gaps. As 195 pages of this book are dedicated to thirty-three original tales (an average of less than six pages per tale), ye can see that the book prioritizes the quantity over the quality.
A lot of tales looks more like drafts of larger tales. The best editorial choice would be to choose a lower number of well-lapidated tales.
Furthermore, the fact that no «Cthulhu Mythos» (popular name for the «Yog-Sothothery», the mythology of the works of the «Kalem Club», circle of writers whose most notable name is Howard Phillips Lovecraft) tales was chosen certainly prejudicial to the anthology, because Lovecraft is trendy nowadays.
The cover has a little problem: The text saying «Histórias inspiradas na obra de Sir Arthur Conan Doyle» («Tales based on the work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle») is too small.
