I'm not entirely sure about that being as much value as you may be placing on it. In all the years of being a wirehead, any community online is increasingly ephemeral, vapid, and parasocial. Only a small handful of people actually stick around for more than a few years, be it internet or meatspace.

Everything that tries to be a 1:1 to discord is probably complex and not very lightweight, and rely on persistent availability to everything to function. XMPP with local side caching is the way. Keep file shares & chat logs ephemeral on the server, let the clients maintain their archive.
