Mestra by Madeline Miller Mestra tries desperately to help her father after Poseidon grants her an unusual ability. I usually really like Miller’s writing, but Mestra didn’t do it for me. Unsure why, the writing is good, sometimes too good. A certain scene was a little too viscerally described for me, typically I have a high tolerance, but not for that particular incident, apparently. Perhaps it was simply too short to allow Miller much depth, and as it’s one of the myths I’m less familiar with, I didn’t bring any preconceptions to it. Still like Miller’s writing a lot and truly hope she’s working on a new novel. ★★★☆☆ https://73pctgeek.com/mestra-by-madeline-miller/ #madelinemiller #mestra #unsure #perhaps #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

As You Wake, Break the Shell by Becky Chambers Cora, a pilot, needs help. Signy, an introverted plant shop owner, may be the only one who can. Really enjoyed this. Very Becky Chambers. Lovely characters, interesting world-building, humanity and gentleness. Can’t wait to finish the story whenever the sequel comes out. ★★★★☆ https://73pctgeek.com/as-you-wake-break-the-shell-by-becky-chambers/ #beckychambers #verybecky #signy #lovely #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Weekly Links 26-43 Draftline — Yet more writing software. I’ve been playing around with it, and I’m really liking it so far. It has some really nifty features, offers a lot of what I’ve been looking for in a non-Scrivener application. Matcha Mountain — Adorable animated short about a little old lady who lives on a mountain made of matcha, and one day discovers someone in need of her help. Encyclopedia of Invisibility — “The Encyclopedia of Invisibility is an object that includes information that has been deemed hidden or erased from history." I love stuff like this, Some I knew about, most I did not. Everhand — “Never writes the same letter twice in a row. Every letter has three hand-drawn versions, and the font picks the next one for you as you type.” Nifty! Light Dropper — A free browser tool to create lit references of all kinds of stuff. I've barely begun playing with it, but so far I'm entranced by how nifty it is! (Also useful!) Links found via my RSS feeds, Mastodon, The Browser, Webcurios, and general internetting.
