kevin boone wrote a 5-part series on writing bare-metal programs for UEFI from a linux box, and it's the most honest intro to the topic i've read. no os, just your C compiled into a PE32+ file the firmware runs at boot. the best part is the "pragmatic digression" chapter, where he admits the real problem isn't booting, it's everything you take for granted being gone. no printf, no fopen, no realloc because EFI can't resize an allocation. paths use backslashes and strings are two bytes wide, so every bit of linux code that walks a string until the zero byte just falls over. he once lost hours because he stored an EFI_STATUS in an int, and it's a 64-bit value. and the line that sums it up: once you start wrapping EFI in a posix-like coating, you're in "a rabbit-hole with no obvious bottom." which is basically how every os ever got written. https://kevinboone.me/efitest_index.html
