It seems in our modern world there are more conspiracy theories than ever. Social media has increased the potential for information and theories to circle the globe in a matter of minutes. Christians are often caught up in such discussions, and often are responsible for ensuring the theory stays alive and grows. While some believe that we absolutely must know of these things and speculate “who” is pulling the strings of the mysteries in our world, I see a bigger problem. A problem of identity. We should not be surprised by the wild speculations that fill social media. We live in a fallen world which is under the sway of the wicked one (1 John 5:19). When we give our attention to conspiracies, we are stepping down from “heavenly places” (Eph. 2:6), laying aside our divine call (1 Pet. 2:9), and identifying as “mere men” (1 Cor. 3:3). We are allowing our hearts to be influenced by fear, or worry, or anger. We are no longer setting our minds on things above (Col. 3:1-2), but are allowing the cares of the world to shape us (Rom. 12:2), and choke the Word (Mark 4:19). Who or what reigns in your heart? What captures your time and attention? Are you not a child of almighty God? Why do you care if the world is filled with lies and deceit? Do you not live for the King of Kings? Be the Light!
