Ok back to politics: The Pentagon quietly asks Boeing and Lockheed Martin to assess their exposure to Anthropic. The blacklist machinery starts moving. Thursday, Feb 26 — Jack Dorsey announces Block (Square, Cash App, Afterpay) is cutting 4,000 jobs (40% of the company) because of "intelligence tools." Amodei publishes his statement: Anthropic "cannot in good conscience" allow its AI to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell posts the deadline: comply by 5:01pm Friday or be designated a national security risk. That evening, Sam Altman sends an all-staff memo: OpenAI holds the same red lines. An open letter begins circulating — signed by employees at Google and OpenAI urging their companies to stand together. Altman tells staff the government is willing to give OpenAI the exact same protections Anthropic was just blacklisted for demanding.
