Sufyan al-Thawri (ra) said:  "When you see a scholar frequenting the wealthy, know that he is a pretender; and when you see a scholar frequenting the rulers, know that he is a thief." Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in al-Shuʿab (8972), and Abu Nuʿaym in al-Hilyah (6/387). Ibn Kathīr reported from al-Naḍr ibn Shumayl (ra), that al-Ma’mūn asked him: “What is Irjā’?” He replied: “A religion that agrees with kings, they gain from it their worldly matters, and lose from it their religion.” (al-Bidāyah wa al-Nihāyah, 14/221)
