5th Avenue Street Photography 5th Avenue Street Photography – New York, New York We are still on 5th Avenue like we’ve been for the last several posts. However, I’m switching from architecture to street photography. Like I often do for my street photos, I convert to black and white, mainly out of tradition. I’m looking south and captured these two women as I included the surrounding environment. It’s a busy scene like 5th Avenue usually is, but the expressions and positions of the subjects make the picture. I’m not sure if the woman is reacting to me taking the photo. Her expression is almost neutral. I especially like the young woman looking backward, futzing with her hair. We simply passed each other on 5th Avenue. That’s the beauty of street photography, capturing those split-second interactions. Blog readers, you’ll love my free monthly photography magazine. Leading Lines, St. Patrick’s Leading Lines, St. Patrick’s – New York, New York We are back to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, directly across the street from the Atlas statue and Rockefeller Center. I think this is the more obvious photo compared to the St. Patrick’s I posted a few days ago. However, it’s potentially more powerful. I’m guessing that the architecture, honed and perfected over hundreds of years, is meant to impress. We have leading lines pointing to the heavens, and the slender towers at the top give the impression of an even taller structure. So can you guess how this photo, the picture of the escalators yesterday, and the Atlas statue with the skyscraper as a backdrop relate to each other? They are all architectural, of course, and found on 5th Avenue. But the largest commonality is the leading lines. They all work to draw the viewer further into the frame. In terms of sequencing blog posts, I also think it was more playful to insert the escalator photo between the two exterior architecture photos. The relationship is not completely obvious, but not completely subtle either. Blog readers, you’ll love my free monthly photography magazine. Main Escalators, Uniqlo Main Escalators, Uniqlo – New York, New York Switching to an interior view of escalators at a retailer seems like a rather abrupt change after showing an Atlas statue at Rockefeller Center yesterday. But I have my reasons, even though the relationship might be a bit tenuous. As you may recall, I have a repeating pattern of having three pictures that have some kind of relationship to each other. Sometimes the relationship is quite obvious. Other times, it might be subtle. The relationship between yesterday’s picture, today’s, and tomorrow’s will become evident soon enough. One definite connection is that all three pictures are from 5th Avenue. This picture is of the main escalators at the Uniqlo on 5th. It’s their flagship location in New York. Uniqlo is a Japanese retailer selling decently fashionable basics at modest prices. Rather than constantly chasing trends, they carry a core set of styles from year to year. It may not be surprising that with my systems-oriented, optimization approach to life, I’ve pretty much standardized on Uniqlo clothing. While I haven’t gotten rid of the rest of my clothing yet, most of what I wear these days is from Uniqlo—from underwear to outerwear. They fit me well, seem low-maintenance enough, and the prices are great. However, if you buy Uniqlo in Japan, I found that the prices are sometimes 30 to 50% lower than in the U.S. They have bigger sales, and the weak yen contributes to the spectacular deals. Atlas, Rockefeller Center Atlas, Rockefeller Center – New York, New York Directly across Fifth Avenue from St. Patrick’s Cathedral is this wonderful statue of Atlas. And while the statue is heroic enough, I love pointing the camera upward to include one of Rockefeller Center’s towers as a backdrop. I also like how this scene is almost like a temple to commerce directly across the street from a “temple” to religion. It’s almost as if they are competing to see which can upstage the other. Atlas is another tourist favorite. I’ve also photographed it before and featured it on the blog three-and-a-half years ago. I shot that previous version on the Fujifilm GFX50S II at a 28mm equivalent focal length. This one is with the much more modest Leica D-Lux 8 compact, but at a wider 24mm equivalent. I like the wider perspective because it makes the background tower appear even taller. The light is also better in this scene, so while I used a more modest camera, the overall picture is better. It goes to show that the environmental conditions and framing are often more important than the type of camera used. Blog readers, you’ll love my free monthly photography magazine. St. Patrick’s Closeup St. Patrick’s Closeup – New York, New York As I mentioned yesterday, I also took a picture of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a tourist favorite. This one, however, is a bit different, as you can tell. I might show a more conventional view of the cathedral in a future post, but I like this picture because it’s not the standard view, focusing mostly on the entrance. The added benefit is seeing the glorious architectural detail even better in a closeup. I used a 36mm equivalent on the Leica D-Lux 8, but this is actually framed tighter. I used perspective correction in my post-processing, which crops further into the frame. However, the benefit is an undistorted view from street level. The building is so tall, and with limited space on the other side of the street, it’s hard to create a completely perspective-corrected image of the entire structure. But taking a subsection like this works. Blog readers, you’ll love my free monthly photography magazine. St. Patrick’s Snapshot St. Patrick’s Snapshot – New York, New York Yes, I took a picture of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, too. So think of this street photograph as a preview of my cathedral coverage. There are some places in New York City that always deserve a photo. I suppose this is one of them. I’ve certainly taken pictures of St. Patrick’s on numerous occasions, but how could I resist taking another shot of this lovely Gothic Revival building? I also like how this cathedral is right in the middle of Midtown Manhattan and across from Rockefeller Center. There are many tourist sites around, but St. Patrick’s holds its own as a tourist destination. Blog readers, you’ll love my free monthly photography magazine. Flags of Rockefeller Center Flags of Rockefeller Center – New York, New York Walking uptown on Fifth Avenue and looking around like a tourist—because I was one—I happened upon this scene. I spotted three flags framed by the trees on the eastern edge of Rockefeller Center. Dramatic architecture is fantastic, and I live for making those photos. However, quiet compositions like this also delight me. It’s probably something that most people didn’t see or simply ignored. I love finding little visuals like this in plain sight. That’s one of the benefits of being a photographer. You learn to see and train yourself to look around more deliberately. Blog readers, you’ll love my free monthly photography magazine. Park Avenue, JP Morgan Chase Tower Park Avenue, JP Morgan Chase Tower – New York, New York For the third and final post on the JPMorgan Chase Tower in this mini-series, we get a really great view of its architectural and engineering superpower. From this angle, you can appreciate how the base is significantly narrower, as the tilted sides show. I understand this wasn’t purely an architectural exercise. The location of the building necessitated a narrower base because of site constraints. The building boldly faces Park Avenue, one of the more glitzy areas of Manhattan. The more conventional skyscrapers look a bit boring compared with the newest kid on the block. I also love the three flags fluttering in the breeze, representing New York State, the United States, and JPMorgan Chase. Blog readers, you’ll love my free monthly photography magazine. Lobby, JP Morgan Chase Tower Lobby, JP Morgan Chase Tower – New York, New York Yesterday, I featured the dramatic style and height of the JPMorgan Chase Tower. Today, a peek at the lobby of this gleaming corporate headquarters. I mentioned that the site required some fancy structural work to create a narrower footprint than the tower above, using fan-shaped columns and triangular bracing. You can see some of that elaborate structure in this photo. I’m often complimentary about the grand old structures of years past, but that’s not because I inherently like older buildings more. I just find that many modern developments “cheap out” on the detailing. They seem like they are built to a budget dictated by accountants. Not so here. Foster + Partners, the architects of the building, clearly had a generous budget to work with. They’ve built a modern equivalent of those grand stone structures, with considerable attention paid to structure, materials, lighting, and architectural details. I was across the street when I shot this photo. You can see multiple guards on duty, and I wasn’t planning to raise any suspicions. Luckily, I shot with the compact Leica D-Lux 8, a sufficiently non-threatening camera. If I had a large mirrorless with a hefty telephoto, it might have been a different story. JP Morgan Chase Tower JP Morgan Chase Tower – New York, New York Not far from where we were staying, they were putting the final touches on the JPMorgan Chase Tower in 2025. I visited a few times to check on the progress. Clearly an extravagant skyscraper, it has the look of a building where the bank spared no expense to create a shining corporate headquarters. And the constraints of the site necessitated some fancy structural work that made the tower even more dramatic. The building uses massive fan-shaped columns and triangular bracing at its base, allowing the much larger tower above to meet the ground on a considerably narrower footprint. You can see some of that structure here in the lower section with the green lighting. My wife and I joked that our modest bank account at Chase might have helped pay for a single lightbulb in this building. Blog readers, you’ll love my free monthly photography magazine.
