I don't want to throw negativity at people today. It's gone midnight, so it's another day. I'm gonna try and do today right. I don't know how long many people here have been in to Bitcoin and/or nostr. Some of you have been around longer than me, some a bit less time. Here's what I remember of those earliest days. In 2012 I was reading about it. Shame I never read about the 5btc faucets, eh? In 2013 I started the faucets and buying some. Very early. Very experimental. Loved it. Loved the potential. In those days there was nothing professional about it all. It was just enthusiastic amateurs, for the most part, trying to build a global financial system out of a few lines of code and buckets of enthusiasm. It was obvious we needed more people from a wider variety of backgrounds, with a wider variety of skills. There was only so much that the small community could do at that point. For context, when I started teaching people about it, early in 2015, maybe 1 in a hundred I spoke to had even heard of it. Fewer still actually had any. Anyway, before I go on too much, I want to offer this perspective. People have been in this game for a long time when they didnt need to be, building from scratch, in a hostile environment. Many mistakes have been made. This one is particularly uncomfortable. But while it's good to hold people to account for their actions and behaviours, it's best to do so for the right reasons. Not vengeance, righteously perceived or otherwise, but learning. We're still a fairly small team against an increasingly hostile environment. We need, now, just as then, to hold eachother to the highest standards of behaviour and police our own and equally we need to pick eachother up, help eachother learn and focus on the only goal that actually matters, ultimately; The disintermediation of the state and the supply of money.
I know there's bigger dramas going on today and I understand if your attention is elsewhere, but I'm seeing a lot of spam suddenly this evening and every spam account I'm looking at before blocking seems to have a primal lightning address. Not sure how easy or difficult it is to prevent this but it'd be nice if they could. Tried tagging Primal in to this post but Amethyst keeps removing the tag link the moment I click the account name from the drop down that appears after I type @
It definitely hits close to home. Anyone who has recommended someone store their life savings on a CC is going to feel sick right now. Even people who didn't use that brand are going to be worried if they're not actively involved with the community.
If I actually had any bitcoin right now I'd be reconsidering my entire set up, looking at it for weak points, potentially moving utxos to new, potentially more secure set ups. Luckily for me I don't have any corn. So I don't have to worry about these things.
Holy shit, the attack is actually escalating?
Cor...imagine if you'd convinced your family to ape in to btc, then convinced them to use one of these wallets... Oof. There's going to be some family dynamics in the next few weeks.
This is really not the way forward. There has to be an open, real conversation within the community in the coming weeks. That means honest an honest look at ourselves, our weaknesses, our mistakes. All of us. That can't happen if we're going to start deleting inconvenient past messaging.
Between 2015 and 2020 I taught hundreds of people about Bitcoin, in various situations, from conferences to workshops to 1-2-1 sessions. Not gonna lie, security was the least favourite subject. That's a small part of what made me give up that role.
Not the first time I've seen along these lines, it happens after every exchange hack. But this definitely hits different.
You're welcome.
I have to wonder why #nostr users have been neglected by while twitter users are getting all the updates. Perhaps events just aren't loading from the relays in the apps I'm using?
This fuck up is going to cost all of us. For the people currently losing funds, it's an absolute tragedy. For the rest of us, this is a fairly chunky psychological blow to the faith people have in the companies that supposedly help us. It's a reputational shit show, not just for NVK and his company, but for the community as a whole.

It's rough, but we've been through rough patches before. The mission remains the same. Some battles are won, others lost. Today was not a good day. Tomorrow might be a better one.
