page 1478 – Just Let The Nerds Talk Their Nerd Talk Okay, I’ve been really down on myself regarding the art in the last couple of pages, so I just wanna take a second to say I’m VERY pleased with how the top panel of this one turned out. I think the sense of scale here came out EXACTLY the way I intended for once. In fact, I deliberately used a smaller font in this page than I really should have, just to make sure I’d cover up as little of the art as possible. Well, I guess I had to find SOME kind of flaw to pick at. Anyway, I’m once again writing this in the wee hours of Tuesday morning… which is a bit of a miracle if you remember all of the complaining I did about how behind schedule I was on everything. Hopefully, this should at least mean that getting tomorrow’s extra Halloween comic done in time shouldn’t be a problem. As I write this days in the past, however, I’m still not sure if I’ll have enough in the tank to get a fresh TWC Voting Incentive done in time. page 1477 – Good Health Practices Well, trying to do a 3D-ish effect of that holograph screen thing viewed from the side seemed like a neat idea at the time… And SPEAKING of things becoming a total mess, the end of this week may be up in the air. Obviously, Saturday is Halloween, and I wanna put out a special something on that day. However, ALSO obviously, we’re supposed to have a regularly scheduled update on Friday. And I’m not sure I’m up to it. I didn;t get anywhere NEAR as much stuff done over the weekend as I usually do (only PARTIALLY because I was bashing out some extra Patreon blogs before the end of the month) and I’m playing catch up WAY more than I should on a week with this much stuff on the To-Do List. Now, I actually DO have page 1478 inked at this point, and I’m already part-way through editing it as I post this. So I’m relatively sure I won’t have to skip a regular page… but I MAY have to skip doing a TWC Voting Incentive if I’m gonna get the extra Halloween thing finished in time. I dunno, we’ll see. I just don’t wanna end the month getting TOO burned out, because I’m already WAY behind schedule on December stuff, and really need to head into November firing on all cylinders to get all that done. page 1476 – Really? This Seems Unhealthy To You? Oh man, this page… There is just SO much going on in that first panel that I could never really get right. I really wanted a low-angle shot with the door looming overhead, visible through the food ship’s dome thinggie. And there are several levels on which that is ISN’T the kind of thing I can reliably pull off. I have a long, well-documented history of just being good at weird perspectives like this. In fact, I straight up threw out an entire draft of the top panel because it turned out wrong. Fully inked and everything. It is VERY rare for me to be so unhappy with the art that I’ll start over completely from scratch like that. So, if other details like the holographic display look a little bit… unpolished, it’s because I really lost a lot of time that would normally be spent polishing up little details by totally re-drawing BIG ones. And speaking of time, as I write this on Monday night/Tuesday morning, I’m really not sure if there’ll be a new Voting Incentive up when you read this on Friday. And that’s not just me being all wishy-washy about my ability to remember when stuff needs to get done. This is actually going to be a pretty darn busy week in Real Life, so I genuinely may not have time to get something else done after getting these regular pages finished up. I dunno, we’ll see. EDIT: Okay, not only DID I manage to finish up a new TWC Voting Incentive in time, but there’s actually MORE on the way! At some point over this weekend, there’s going to be another Far Out There blog post over on Patreon! page 1475 – Oooopening A lot of weird artist-y bits in this one. For one thing, this was ORIGINALLY supposed to be the big, climactic panel for the previous comic, but fitting everything into a single page just wasn’t gonna work. For another, I had considered putting some extra doodles of the characters’ faces in, just so I’d have something to connect the speech bubbles to.. but then I decided the dialog was distinct enough that any reader who’d been paying attention would be able to work out who was saying what just from reading it… And now that I look at the finished draft,I actually wish I HAD gone ahead and thrown in the faces, just to fill in some of the extra space. Yeah, attempting to cram this visual into an already crowded comic wouldn’t have worked, but I think this page may err in the opposite direction and give the door a little TOO much room to breathe. …or maybe I’m just cranky from being awake too long while working on FRIDAY’S page, which I shall queue up as soon as I finish posting his one. page 1474 – It Keeps Coming And Coming And Coming Like Tuesday’s page, I’ve gotta grumble about this one a bit, though the full context won’t be apparent until NEXT week. See, this is another one of those cases where the original comic idea was just too big, so I had to lob off part of it and turn it into a whole desperate page. When ya’ll see it, I hope you’ll agree it was the right move from a VISUAL stand-point, but I’m not a huge fan of how it worked out from a WRITING standpoint. I actually wound up going a lot harder on the dialog in this page than originally planned, because it just kinda felt like it was missing something without the intended punchline. Blah blah blah, artist complaints. Specifically, I didn’t do anywhere NEAR enough planning regarding where the speech bubbles would go. I probably should have gone back and re-drawn at least part of this page in order to make things less messy, but I’ve got a long drive to make tomorrow, so I needed to commit to what I had and get it done in time to get some sleep. And, thankfully, I did! And not just this page either, but I once again managed to get Friday’s page done ahead of time too!
