In order to enforce your “international rules based order”you need: 1) country with reserve currency status that accepts your “rules based order” and/or 2) a young population that is highly motivated (willing to die), trained and adequately armed for military confrontation. Europe (and Carney’s Canada) have neither. They have zero leverage against the US. The sooner they can accept this, the better they can position themselves in the negotiations. They won’t of course, they’ll just continue to dig their heels in and hope Trump goes away in 3 years and another POTUS comes in to support their “rules based order”. 3 years of “hoping” seems like an ill advised strategy in a world where major powers make big plays on a weekly basis. 3 more years of Europe and Canada taking Ls on the global stage.
