Hillary Clinton, Obama, and the Alt-Right all draw on his ideas.He’s something like Gramsci in Europe. A radical leftist who was studied in depth by the radical right. He writes it himself in the preface to Rules for Radicals: “the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom—Lucifer” How should one confront the devil? We need the light, but darkness arises from it as well. Emancipatory movements that oppress the world. Oppressors who liberate the world. Good, evil—none of these are standards for understanding anything. I think we need a new metaphysics, a new radical dialectic, a completely new understanding of a globalized, networked mass society. All you hear are these “doomsday” apocalyptic warnings. Meanwhile, things are evolving rapidly in two directions. On the one hand, there’s the U.S. military-industrial complex with its surveillance, war, and the most brutal genocide; and on the other, there’s the open-source wave triggered by China that’s sweeping across the entire world. You’d have to be a terrible anti-communist racist not to see which side you should be on. It’s absolutely disastrous to just wait and see whether you’d prefer apple or lemon flavor. This is a decision that will change and influence our future—perhaps our entire civilization. People realize this, of course. There’s a kind of pathological apathy that arises from the fact that there’s no meaningful vision for the future. China has that. Chinese universities are developing new drugs and technologies. Work is becoming easier. Dark factories build things without human intervention. There’s also a counter-movement to AI in China, but not out of fear—rather, to create or preserve analog spaces. Hence the artists’ villages and the famous bookstores. Beautiful, liberating places without AI. But not out of fear or desperation—rather, because it’s possible, because everyday life is becoming simpler. China is at least 20 years ahead of us.
