I see it differently. I think the most likely scenario is that they’ve both realized they are developing the most important thing of our generation. It is a fine line between developing too recklessly and too slowly, both will lead to failure. Who will be able to thread that needle or walk the line the best? They probably think themselves and based on past performance I tend to agree. Like if they put someone in charge who doesn’t think it’s going to destroy the world then maybe it will. And if they put someone in charge who puts too many guardrails the product will suck ass.

Yea I could 100% see it be the classic self serving regulatory moat or a marketing angle. But for me I was scared of how ai would play out before llms and I’ve been blown away about what they can do now. So I’m super dooper scared even if it is quite compartmentalized. If I was a ceo of one of those companies, I could see myself making the same comments. I really don’t know shit though 🤷‍♂️

I tend to think of your not at least 10% doom and gloom then you aren’t acknowledging how powerful ai currently is, how quickly we got here and how quickly it may advance. No one knows how this will play out. There are many different possible futures and some of them are not good for humanity. For the regular Joe like myself, i don’t think it’s productive to be “anti-ai” as a personality, in fact i try as much to embrace it because i know it’s an unstoppable technology. However im happy that there are a large number of employees at big ai companies that are scared shitless and trying to develop it safely. I think they are some of the smartest in the world and shouldn’t be lumped together with certain other fanatics that just happen to take on this cause.
