There are a couple different dm implementations. An old, not-so-good spec is slowly being replaced with a better one, so not everything works together at the moment. But it's getting better. Look for a NIP-17 supporting client & inbox relay (just 1 or 2) Encourage your friends to do the same, or ask the devs of your favorite client to add nip17 dm support.😊 There are a lot of people who just don't use dms though.

Your relay settings in Amethyst do not control which wallet app opens when you initiate a zap. At some point, you must have chosen Fountain and selected 'always' from the list of apps presented when you send a zap. You'll need to long press the Fountain app icon in your app menu, select info > set as default > turn off default setting, to fix that. As far as your Amethyst relay settings go, select 'default' and save, until you have a chance to evaluate your needs and find relays that meet your requirements. There are some articles listed on this profile that may be helpful in understanding some of those categories. Also https://nostr.watch is a great tool for discovering what relays support various features. Default settings should work just fine until you have a chance to explore. There may be a short tutorial video for exactly this subject available soon.

Yes, they have a free tier. You just need to set up an account with them. I do not believe they support bunker log in, as of now. They do have DM log in, which isn't ideal but it works on mobile. Extension log in is supported, as well.

I am unfamiliar with primal's current UI, but I have seen reference to a way to shut off notifications by streamer. It looked like it involved opening the stream and a 3-dot menu.

Zap splits & forwarding only work when paid from a client that also supports them. To the best of my knowledge, that is Amethyst, Yakihonne, and Habla.
