There are advantages over potatoes. No starch, so if you diabetic or pre-diabetic (as I am), they are an advantage. Their drawback is that you can get some wicked gas from them, if you eat them raw. Boiled and mashed, though, they taste like potatoes to me.

Yes, because there are so many deer in this neighborhood that anything edible gets stripped bare. Our garden has a 6-foot fence, which is nothing for a deer to jump, normally, but we also stretch a sun screen across it and the garden boxes may discourage them. The 8 sunchokes we planted last year filled a 4ft x 8 ft garden box with tubers. I pickled a good amount of them, and we've planted more this year.

We've been growing Jerusalem Artichokes (sunchokes) the past few years. Very tasty and nutritious. And, very aggressive growers.

“As to the history of the revolution, my ideas may be peculiar perhaps singular. What do we mean by the revolution? The war? That was no part of the revolution; it was only an effect and consequence of it. The revolution was in the minds of the people, and this was effected from 1760 to 1775, in the course of fifteen years, before a drop of blood was shed at Lexington.” – John Adams, from a letter to Thomas Jefferson, August 24th, 1815

"We view ourselves on the eve of battle. We are nerved for the contest, and must conquer or perish. It is vain to look for present aid: none is at hand. We must now act or abandon all hope! Rally to the standard, and be no longer the scoff of mercenary tongues! Be men, be free men, that your children may bless their father's name." – Sam Houston Addressing the troops on April 21, 1836
