On this day in 2016, hackers breached Bitfinex — then the world's largest Bitcoin exchange — and stole 119,756 BTC worth approximately $72 million. It was the second-largest Bitcoin exchange hack in history after Mt. Gox. Bitfinex controversially socialized the losses across all users with a 36% haircut, issued recovery tokens, and eventually repaid everyone. The stolen coins were traced and two people were arrested in 2022.
