The Story of Grameen Bank The story of Grameen Bank begins in 1976 when Muhammad Yunus, a professor at the University of Chittagong, launched a research project to examine the possibility of designing a credit delivery system to provide banking services to the rural poor. In October 1983, the project was transformed into an independent bank. The name “Grameen” comes from Yunus’s desire to help ease poverty by opening up financial services to the most impoverished people in rural Bangladesh, especially women. Yunus began by lending small amounts of money to women who did not have access to traditional banking services because they did not have collateral or formal credit. The principles of Grameen Bank include: Ownership by borrowers. The bank is owned by its borrowers, who are also members and shareholders. No collateral or guarantors. The bank relies on mutual trust and peer pressure among the borrowers. Services. The bank offers loans, savings, insurance, education, and health services to its clients. Grameen Bank has had an impressive effect on the lives of millions in Bangladesh and beyond. With over 9 million borrowers, mostly women, and having disbursed over $30 billion in loans since its establishment, the bank has assisted in decreasing the poverty rate in Bangladesh from 70% in 1976 to 21% in 2018. In 2006, the organization and its founder, Yunus, were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2011, the Bangladesh Government forced Yunus to resign from Grameen Bank, saying that at age 72, he was years beyond the legal limit for the position.
