I mean you *can* do that and get *something*, for a very sketchy definition of *something*. In fact I tried it with Codex 5.3, I asked it to build a network TUI for my modem/router/switch statistics. I gave it full device docs, sample webui devtools recordings of me accessing them, and a detailed plan of what to gather. It ran in what appeared to be a very impressive loop of going through many tasks, tests, device and network details, for in the end being unable to get any real data and generating only synthetic stats. I nudged it to gather data from the devices by explaining how to access the web uis of the products, and it was adamant that the security of router was unbreakable (a LuCI based ui, it could not figure out a random number was passed back and forth on requests). After explaining it all, and finally getting ui access, it made up endpoints that don’t exist and insisted on return error 500 as data and saying the network was unhealthy… you get the point, these models need real hand-holding if you actually care about the output, otherwise they fool themselves into succeeding.
Oh I agree, and LLMs are definitely useful as tools. But the article explicitly says he prompts it with a general idea and then returns at the end of the automated iterations to gather the results, as if the agent is a coworker that only needs a rough idea of what to build. That’s not the case.
