If you still trust CoinKite you need to update the firmware and only then generate a new seed to move funds to. Even better is to generate your own seed with enough dice rolls, add a strong passphrase and if you're comfortable with that, go multisig with high entropy seeds stored on devices by different manufacturers.
Unfortunately both. But to be fair the users were deceived. Yet, shouldn't have trusted in the first place. Very very tough lesson, many of us can count ourselves lucky as it could have happened to us too. Live and learn.
