The best doctor is a sick doctor! A doctor so sick that she couldnāt fix her issues herself and had to go to seek out another doctor. A doctor so sick that she got bounced off from that doctor to another, a specialist. Then another. Then another⦠all the while she got sicker and sicker. Her life felt like groundhog day type loops of being referred to a new specialist, doing every conceivable test under the sun, then repeatedly being told, āYour blood work is fine⦠Your labs are all within range⦠Thereās nothing wrong with you.ā To add insult to injury, she knew what the doctor-gods, sitting behind their doctor-god desks, where she used to sit, are thinking. It was what she used to think when she sent what in doctor-talk they called ādifficultā and āsupratentorialā patients bouncing out the doorāthat itās all in her crazy head and that what she really needed was a shrink and antidepressants to chase the delusions out of that head, shaking their (clearly) superior, clever heads, a little annoyed and relieved to be rid of her so that they could get on with their pill-dispensing to the next patient, just like they were taught in medical school. Whoās a good boy? (Wag, wag!) After years of being bed-bound and unable to work, imagine how hopeless and depressed she must have been that she resorted to desperate measures, like (gasp!) changing her nutrition, meditation, acupuncture, doing Qigong and entertaining medical psychic friends--all things that she thought were infinitely unfounded placebo-candy for those silly, gullible souls who were too dumb to worship science⦠only to find that shockingly, step by step, she was feeling better and better. Attention, energy and serendipity flow hand-in-hand. Next thing she knew, she was discovering things like natural medicine and functional medicine doctors who actually treat the root cause of disease and never say things like, āYouāll need blood thinners or statins or insulin (or whatever other pharmaceutical drug) for the rest of your life.ā And so she discovers holistic healing, first healing herself, then others, from the root cause up. Realizing that there is a very different way to practice medicine and wellness is a really hard, jagged pill to swallow for many an allopathic doctor, but she gets over it and lives life with a fullness, richness and satisfaction that she has never felt before. If this story intrigues you watch it right over here! This is probably one of my favorite interviews and outlines the story of the lady above, Dr. Cynthia Li. The podcast host Dr. Mark Hyman also shares parts of his own journey, one that is quite similar to hers, where he had no other choice but to make a change unimaginable to their medical training to literally survive. I canāt get enough of their shock and delight as they recount their journeys of how they pulled themselves out of āincurableā autoimmune diseases and severe illnesses, mostly naturally, have tapered off medicines they had been using for decades and are now not just surviving but also thriving. And this is why the best doctors are sick doctors! I loved Dr. Cynthia Liās story SO much that I bought her book Brave New Medicine and have read it twice, taking notes and recommendations throughout. I really hope this video inspires you and makes you realize that there are many different ways to heal! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VZrY2vSbws&t=3649s
