The smart answer is nobody really knows, but physical-chemical interactions seem to play a big role. Science doesn’t even know how a bunch of atoms arranged together to form a living monocelular organism, let alone a complex system such as the human brain. For all we know it’s all emergent behavior but we don’t know what we don’t know, and we shouldn’t naively ignore this fact when coming up with hypothesis. I think life simply isn’t a solved problem, quantum entanglement still sounds like black magic to me and I wouldn’t put behind humanity figuring out some sort of “soul sensing machine” (very loose use of the therm soul here as a placeholder for an unknown unknown) in the future just like we can view radio waves in a spectrometer.

We don’t actually run software on our brains though. Even if we could, say, copy 100% of the memories of one biological brain into another, the resulting individuals would still be different from one another, consciousness can only be simulated by AGI, never truly experienced. The fact that “copying individuals” is even possible with AGI further proves the fact that their “software/consciousness” isn’t inherently entangled to the commodity hardware they can be executed on. Same applies to hypothetical 3d printed biological brain, you’re just pumping up the accuracy of the simulation. Same case as animals, just because they aren’t human doesn’t mean acting like an asshole towards them is justified.

I agree that people often get caught up with “mine is bigger” and NIHS, but single source of truth implies single point of failure, and that is an unacceptable tradeoff IMO. Sure you can have client side censorship on nostr but contrary to, say WhatsApp and Telegram where using certain alternative clients risks getting your account banned, there’s no one in charge of your nsec other than yourself. Censorship resistance is more of a spectrum, and I wouldn’t say trying to make things censorship resistant is a death sentence to consistency, take torrent for instance, it’s p2p, more resilient than nostr and yet delivers fully consistent content.

Massive companies have been violating GPL and other copyleft licenses long before AI became a thing, but on the other way around: by modifying code and not making the changes publicly accessible. Once again, legal systems around the world have turned the blind eye for them, while simultaneously extending the expiration date of patents of potentially life changing medications and other shady stuff. It is very clear that the system practices double standards, any and everything can and will be subverted to serve their interests. Still, even if we take GPL to be a gentleman’s agreement, it would be desirable to build and promote ways to ensure a given LLM was trained on ethically sourced data… either willingly or not i.e. poisoning should at the very least make it possible to fingerprint data that “didn’t want to be there” (though most current poisoning tools target protecting audiovisual media). —— Another way people look at it is like “since this thing snooped from everyone, everyone has the right to use it”, time doesn’t go backwards, the damage is already done so you should try to recover your losses through it. “If you don’t do it, someone else will”.
