The middle was open like a pantry and had an opening for entry. The shelves were 2’ deep so that they could hold a lot and you could access them from inside and out.

A bit off topic, but I really love that column/shelf. I had the idea to do something like it, for a pantry, a few years ago. It didn’t have backing and you could access it from inside and out.

I just recently found out about the steamboat Arabia that sank in 1856 and was found in 1988 in Kansas City. Buried 1/2 mile from where the river is now, it and it’s cargo were remarkably wellpreserved. https://youtu.be/Fb1ZjVghAPQ
