Modern science has made great advancements since the age of the self- or patron-funded "gentleman scientist"... But I agree that the loss of this category is a loss for innovation. Currently in the Western world, "scientist" is basically synonymous with "professor at R1 university supported by government grants." This is a Bad Thing. There needs to be more institutional alternatives to Academia for high-quality, disruptive scientific research.
