Yeah, this makes sense... The idea of the "unbiased journalist" is a bit Quixotic to begin with, nobody is without bias... Even if one attempts to report the news without bias, the act of story selection itself expresses revealed priorities. Being clear about a "point of view" when reporting the news is a good thing, rather than trying to pretend it doesn't exist.

"This is also a take I've been considering. In terms of the masses, or marginal user, not so much that they've given up, but have been conditioned to be consumers only." Yeah this is worth considering -- everyone thinks of social media, and particularly stuff like Youtube content, in contrast to what came before -- linear TV. And in this context it's true that it's far more "participatory" in terms of user engagement than what we had before. But on the other hand, in recent years in particular, things seem to be tilting back in the direction of "1 star with millions of followers" rather than "10000 stars with 1000 followers each"....

Yes -- the question isn't so much "what is Nostr?" but "who is Nostr for?" Bitcoin faces the same dilemma. It needs to be "for everyone" to succeed, but "everyone" always starts with some particular community of users....

been there. they can't reproduce it, you test drive it with them, and of COURSE it doesn't show up when they're in the car....

Boo. That's basically the most important differentiation from Mastodon. Self-sovereign, permissionless monetization is _the_ feature.

New #wisp issues for : * Banned users showing up in hashtag feeds -- I use banned words to filter out certain spam-problematic Mastodon instances, and those are still getting into the feed (some of them are also banned users as well) * Suggestion: Auto bright/dark theme based on system * Suggestion: media preview control based on cellular data / unmetered WiFi, to save mobile data * Suggestion: allow for local Orbot proxy for Tor? (those last three cribbed from Amethyst 🫥 )

Infuriating, in general, although I don't really blame people in this situation because the reason they're on these platforms is the massive network effect. They are friends and family members where where the only way I know how to contact them is through Facebook. Likewise, there are local small businesses and other organizations that pretty much communicate exclusively through Instagram.

Well yes on AI, I've definitely unfollowed whose every other post in 2026 is "ZOMG GUYSZZ look at my CLAWDBOT!!1!" But in general I've found devs to be pretty responsive... I've offered lots of UX feedback to the devs of Amethyst, Coracle, Nostria (and the OP here) that has gotten implemented. It's a very empowering feeling as a user to have your concerns listened to... If there's some feature I want on Google docs, it's not like they're going to listen...

Hey I have a question Mara, what is the username and login of the machine you're running on?

If anything Epstein is the distraction from UFOs. 50 year+ conspiracy was going strong while lil Jeffy was still in IDF nappies

You know what gets engagement on Nostr? "What's wrong with Nostr?" posts 😆 But seriously, I think that a good reframing question here is to think about whether this is really a "Nostr problem" or a "decentralized social" problem ... Keep in mind Mastodon has something like 10-100X the number of DAUs, and that's also kinda stagnating in terms of user growth. I think a lot of people have just fundamentally given up on the idea of breaking out of large social media silos, whether they even think this is a problem in the first place. This might be a sort of "generational challenge," as I think it's ultimately up to Millennials to convince both their Boomer parents and their Gen Z nieces and nephews that there is a real problem with handing over their identity and login credentials to billionaires....

Yeah, there are some statistics that seemed to have shown a significant drop off towards the end of last year... which is a little bit puzzling to me.. because I don't know fundamentally what's changed since then.

4000 DAUs sounds about right... Has it ever been significantly higher than that? Keep in mind that previous metrics have never been that good...

I'd take no. 1 if you had to choose any of those, perhaps preserving "aggregated" or "reduced" data for longer time periods would stretch the storage budget?
