Thanks for that. So right off the bat, this only looks at pubmed, specifically biomedical papers, so it's not fair to say "academic papers" in general. Also, saying they've gone up 10x doesn't give much context. They went from 5 to 57 per 10,000 papers (and each paper will have dozens of references). So while 10x is true, the actual number is still miniscule. I'm sure it's due to LLMs as you say, but it's still quite rare.
