I tried with OpenOffice which crashed opening the document.

I finally used Google Docs—at least it's free. I needed to edit a report written in Markdown (I'd converted it with Pandoc). Maybe I didn't need to convert it to DOCX first.

Anybody knows how to edit docx files without paying a license to Microsoft?
