this could even be where the story of atlantis came from. after the catastrophe, the two branches of humanity may have had limited interaction. surface survivors knew that an advanced society escaped somewhere beyond their reach but as thousands of yrs passed, this knowledge was lost. perhaps what began as a real memory slowly turned into myth. eventually all that remained was the legend of atlantis.
